(Pizarro 688; adult S5; 8-10am Mon-Sat) A canary yellow 19th-century mansion is impos-
sible to ignore unless you're color-blind. Built in neoclassical style, it has beautiful win-
dow gratings, slender interior columns and gold moldings on the ceilings. General Juan
Manuel Iturregui lived here after he famously proclaimed independence. Note the limited
operating hours.

(Junín 682; adult/child S5/1; 9am-5pm Mon-Sat, to 1pm Sun) This well-curated museum has ar-
tifacts from the Moche, Chimú and Inca cultures. But it's worth popping in for the build-
ing itself: a restored 17th-century mansion with striking cedar pillars.

(Pizarro 620; 9am-1pm & 4-8pm Mon-Sat) Now the Banco Continental building, this building
is where Trujillo's independence from colonial rule was formally declared on December
29, 1820.

MUSEO CASSINELLI
(N de Piérola 607; admission S7; 9am-1pm & 3-6pm Mon-Sat) One of the more unusual archae-
ological museums in Peru, this private collection is housed in the basement of a Repsol
gas station. It contains some 2000 ceramic pieces on display - including bird-shaped
whistling pots which each produce unique notes.

Dozens of agencies offer day tours of the city (S53 per person), as well as group excur-
sions to nearby pre-Columbian sites (S60-S70). Note that admission to archaeological
sites is generally not included in the tour price. If you prefer a private guide, ask at iPerú
