Sillustani
On the windswept Andean plain northwest of Puno is one of Peru's more unusual burial
sites. Dotting a chain of rolling hills that comprise the Lago Umayo peninsula are a series
of chullpas (funerary towers) that once held the remains of entire clans. The Sillustani
chullpas ( Click here ) have long since been pillaged for their artifacts, but the towers re-
main - some of them up to 12m tall - guarding the plain like monumental silent sentinels
from the past.
