Trujillo
01 / POP 54,000
Stand in the right spot and the glamorously colonial streets of this coastal settlement look
like they've barely changed in hundreds of years (except for the honking taxis). Founded
by Francisco Pizarro, the city has a reputation for being independent -minded. In 1820 it
was the first Peruvian city to declare indepen dence from Spain. And, in the 20th century,
it was here that the populist workers' party Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana
(APRA) was founded, and where many of its members were later massacred.
Today, Trujillo remains a vibrant center of art and culture. (It's the home of Peru's na-
tional dance - the marinera .) It is also conveniently situated alongside some of the coun-
try's most incredible pre-Columbian sites, including the behemoth ChimĂș capital of Chan
Chan and the Moche ceremonial sites of Huacas del Sol y de la Luna (Temples of the Sun
and Moon), which date back 1500 years.
Sights
The downtown area is chock-full of colonial buildings and churches that make for excel-
lent photo ops, only a few of which are listed here. Hours can be erratic.
