There is no technical climbing, but it does require good acclimatization and physical
fitness. Daily ascents range from 500m to 1200m and the average day involves about
12km on the trail, or anywhere from four to eight hours. (Though you may experience at
least one 10- to 12-hour day.) Most trekkers take extra rest days along the way because of
the length and altitude.

Chavín de Huántar

The Conchucos Valley (called the Callejón de Conchucos) runs parallel to the Callejón de
Huaylas on the eastern side of the Cordillera. Chavín de Huántar, at the south end of the
valley, lays claim to one of the most important and mysterious pre-Inca ruins in the
Andes. While many folks whiz through on day trips from Huaraz, consider spending the
