Artesonraju's 15 Minutes of Fame
If you think the dramatic peak of Artesonraju (5999m) looks familiar, that's because the mountaintop spent a chunk
of the '80s and '90s as the peak featured in Paramount Pictures' live-action logo. The famous view is of its north-
east face as seen from Quebrada Arhuaycocha (also known as Mirador Alpamayo).
Cordillera Huayhuash
This more remote mountain range hosts an impressive medley of glaciers, summits, lakes
and high-altitude passes (over 4500m), all packed into a hardy area only 30km across. The
feeling of utter wilderness is the big draw; you are more likely to spot the graceful An-
dean condor here than in other parts of the Cordilleras.
Many visitors explore it on the Cordillera Huayhuash Circuit, a stunning 10- to 12-day
trek through multiple high-alpine passes with spine-tingling views. The dramatic lakes
along the eastern flank provide great campsites and give hikers a wide choice of routes to
make this trek as difficult or as easy as they want.
