lodge is in a prime position for exploring the Llanganuco Lakes area and charging the
Santa Cruz trek ( Click here ) . Lodge rooms have down-feather beds and balconies.
The food is excellent.
3 HUMACCHUCO COMMUNITY TOURISM PROJECTS

program operating a comfy guesthouse in Humacchuco (outside of Yungay). Here, vis-
itors can learn about local culture and savor pachamanca (a stew cooked in the ground
with rocks).
4 ANDES LODGE PERU

room S60/100, all incl breakfast) A 20-minute drive from the end of the Santa Cruz trek in
Yanama, this is one of the best mountain lodges in the Callejón de Huaylas. Expect
home-cooked meals, blazing hot showers and snug beds with down comforters.

Dangers & Annoyances
Trying to race into the mountains without acclimatizing will likely result in altitude sick-
ness, which can get pretty serious. (See Click here f or details.)
Overall, the city is safe, though there have been robberies, especially in the area of the
Mirador de Rataquenua and the Wilkahuaín ruins. It is best to go with a group or hire a
taxi.
