Trekking
If trekking is your thing, spend some time tackling the longer hikes around the Cordilleras.
1 SANTA CRUZ TREK
The area's most popular trek is a wondrous five-day walk that ascends the spectacular
Quebrada Santa Cruz valley and crosses the Punta Unión pass (4760m) before tum-
bling into Quebrada Huarípampa on the other side. Head-turning sights include emer-
ald lakes, sensational views of many Cordillera peaks, beds of bright alpine wild-
flowers and stands of red qeñua trees.
2 OLLEROS TO CHAVÍN DE HUÁNTAR
If you're short on time but still want icy-peak time, try this two- to three-day trek. The
40km trip travels along pretty villages and pre-Inca roads - some with great views of
the Uruashraju (5722m), Rurec (5700m) and Cashan (5716m) mountains. Bonus: the
hot springs at the end of the route.
