Huaraz, Trujillo & the North
In the north, expect the un expected . Majestic mountains - the highest outside the Him-
alayas - are bordered by desert coast studded with the remnants of some of the most artful
pre-Columbian civilizations to ever inhabit the continent.
To the interior, you'll find the Cordillera Blanca, a mecca for hiking, trekking and moun-
tain climbing - all located within convenient reach of the 3000-year-old ruins at Chavín de
Huántar, an ancient ceremonial center whose rise heralded the birth of art. And along the
coast you'll find long-forgotten adobe pyramids and splendid museums tucked between
bottle-green oases. Oh, and did we mention the pumping surf scene?
The north offers dramatic mountain landscapes, hospitable rural villages, hip-shaking
cumbia music and delectable regional cuisine. Welcome to Peru.
