Day One
Most treks begin at
Km 82
on the railway that leads to Aguas Calientes. After crossing
the
Río Urubamba
(2600m), you'll climb gently along the river to the first archaeologic-
Cusichaca. The path then leads southwards, 7km to the hamlet of
Wayllabamba
(3000m).
Many groups spend their first night camping here, where you can also buy bottled drinks
and take in views of the snowcapped
Nevado Verónica
(5750m).
Day Two
From here, the route crosses the
Río Llullucha
, then climbs steeply up along the river.
This area is known as
Tres Piedras
(Three Stones; 3300m), though the boulders are no
longer visible. From here it is a long, very steep 3km climb through humid woodlands.
The trail eventually emerges on the bare mountainside of
Llulluchupampa
(3750m),
