The Inca Trail
The most famous trek in South America, the Inca Trail, is walked by thousands of travel-
ers every year. Although the total distance is only about 40km, the ancient trail laid by the
Incas from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu (one of many Inca roadways) winds its
way up and down and around the mountains, snaking over three high Andean passes and
providing extravagant views of snowy peaks and distant rivers. It is an unforgettable ex-
perience.
Excursions vary in length, from two to four days, utilizing different starting points and
campsites. The following itinerary serves as a rough guide.
