Booking a Great Trek
Trekking in the area around Cuzco has become increasingly popular, especially the journey on the Inca Trail. Unfor-
tunately, this has brought out some less-than-stellar operators. Common complaints include minimal food, missing
train tickets, leaking tents and overloaded porters. Here's what you need to know to book a great trek:
INCA TRAIL: REGULATIONS & FEES
Only 500 people each day are allowed on the trail and they must have a permit and be in the company of a licensed
guide. Tour prices generally include a tent, food, a cook, porters to carry group gear (you are expected to carry your
own pack), one-day admission to the ruins and train fare back to Cuzco. Average price: US$350 to US$500 per per-
son.
Book six months in advance between May and August.
ALTERNATIVES TO THE INCA TRAIL
If you can't get a permit for the Inca Trail, there are other equally stellar treks that go to Machu Picchu, via the vil-
lage of Santa Teresa, through the Lares Valley, or along the snowy peak of Salkantay.
