In-Depth Information
Lampa
Known as La Ciudad Rosada (the Pink City) for its dusty, pink-colored buildings, the charming little town of Lampa
is an attractive old Spanish outpost. A significant commercial center in colonial days, it still shows a strong Spanish
influence. Following are some of the key sattractions:
Iglesia de Santiago de Apostol (Plaza de Armas; tours S10; 9am-12:30pm & 2-4pm) A
lovely baroque church, well worth seeing for its life-size sculpture of St James (Santi-
ago) on a real stuffed horse, returning from the dead to trample the Moors. Oh, and did
we mention the huge domed tomb topped by a copy of Michelangelo's Pietá ?
Sublime.
Municipalidad de Lampa (Town Hall; admission S2; 8am-12:45pm & 1:30-4pm Mon-Fri;
9am-1pm Sat & Sun) A historic spot that has a little museum honoring Peruvian expres-
sionist painter Victor Humareda (1920-86), as well as another copy of Michelangelo's
Pietá .
Casa Romero ( 952-65-1511, 952-71-9073; casaromerolampa.com ; Aguirre 327; s/d/tr incl
breakfast S50/80/120) This friendly guesthouse has well-appointed rooms with down
duvets. It can provide full board with advance booking or you can drop in on the res-
taurants around the plaza.
Lampa is located northwest of Puno, via Juliaca. It's an excellent place for a day trip or to kill a few hours before
flying out of Juliaca. You can also hire a taxi for the day to drive you over from Puno and wait around while you see
the sights.

splashed with psychedelic murals. It moves to a thumping mixture of modern beats and

Artesanías (handicrafts) - from musical instruments and jewelry to scale models of reed
islands to wool and alpaca sweaters - are sold in every second shop in the town center.
For household goods and clothes, head to Mercado Bellavista on Av El Sol (though
watch out for pickpockets).
