Chavín de Huántar
The Unesco-recognized ruins of Chavín de Huántar ( Click here ) were once a ceremonial
center. Today this feat of engineering, built between 1200 BC and 800 BC, has striking
templelike structures above ground and a labyrinthine complex of corridors, ducts and
chambers below ground. Nearby, the outstanding Museo Nacional de Chavín is home to in-
tricate, horrifying carved heads that once embellished Chavín's walls.
