You'll spend the night here (in Nazca - not the cemetery!), and the next morning, return
to Lima. If you want to extend the trip, continue on to the highland city of Arequipa.
AREQUIPA & THE CANYONS A Little Bit City, A
Little Bit Country
A dash of colonial splendor. A dollop of rural idyll. And a heaping dose of wilderness.
That's what you'll get on this combination trip around Peru's fabled 'White City.'
Start by flying into (1) Arequipa , or coming overland from Nazca. (Note: you can also
fly from Cuzco.) Spend a day relaxing in the city's rambling colonial center while you ac-
climatize to the altitude. On your second day, pay a visit to the citadel-sized Monasterio
de Santa Catalina and the frozen ice princess at the Museo Santuarios Andinos.
From here, choose between a two- or three-day guided excursion into the (2) Cañón
del Colca . The first option is an overnight visit, done largely by car, with spurts of hiking
and a stop at a lookout that allows for great views of the El Misti volcano. The second op-
tion is for the trekking set, and involves walking from (3) Cabanaconde to (4) Chivay (or
vice versa), staying at simple village guesthouses along the way.
Afterwards, return to a day (or two) of rest in Arequipa, an opportunity to enjoy the
spicy cuisine, teeming cultural scene and excellent nightlife.
