4 GEYSER DE PINCHOLLO
Pinchollo, on the south side of the Río Colca is one of the canyon's poorer villages
with few tourist facilities. People in the know come here to trek three hours uphill to a
geothermal area where a geyser spurts out of the mountainside.
5 CHURCHES
Unlike the Cañón del Cotahuasi, the Colca was colonized by the Spanish who brought
their religion and ecclesial architecture with them. As a result, each of the dozen or so
villages in the canyon has its own church and all of them are a different. Lari's is the
largest, Coporaque's is the oldest, Yanque's has the most decorative exterior and
Maca's, with a huge gilded altarpiece, is the most impressive inside.
