Gran Hotel Bolívar
On the west side of the plaza is this stately hotel from 1924, renowned for its pisco cock-
tails.
Jirón de la Unión
This humble pedestrian passageway, now lined with cinemas and shoe stores, was once
the heart of aristocratic life in the city.
Iglesia de la Merced
First constructed in 1541, this ornate baroque church stands on the site of the first Mass in
Lima. Peek inside for a glimpse at the impressive mahogany altars and a venerated silver
crucifix.
Plaza de Armas
Jirón de la Unión ends at the square where the city was founded. In the era of the viceroys
it served as market, bullpen and even execution site for the condemned.
La Catedral de Lima
On the eastern side of the plaza is the restored cathedral. By the main door, look for the
once-misplaced remains of conquistador Francisco Pizarro.
Palacio Arzobispal
On the adjacent corner, the Archbishop's Palace boasts some of the city's best-preserved
Moorish balconies - perfectly designed for retiring people-watchers.
