maturity. However, the relationship of root growth to plant
development was poorly understood.
Anthesis or fl owering refers to the events between the
opening and closing of the spikelet (fl oret) and lasts for 1 to 2½
hours. Flowing generally begins upon panicle expiration or on
the following day and is consequently considered synonymous
with heading. Anthesis generally occurs between 9 a.m. to 3
p.m., but varies at places. The steps involved are:
a) The tips of the lemna and palea (hulls) open.
b) The fi laments elongate.
