less yield, thus suggesting a cold requirement for the crop

Late planted crop was affected adversely by low temperature,
in Bangladesh, during panicle emergence and grain fi lling
period resulting in lower grain yield (Salam et al. 1992).
It has also been noted that within a moderate range, low
temperature during the reproductive stage appears to favour
increasing spikelet number. In the northern region of Japan a
large number of spikelets can be produced per unit nitrogen
or dry weight of vegetative part than in southern Japan
