Picking Your Topic
So are you ready for a dirty little secret about blogging? Here it is: Topic selection is not
nearly as important as many people think. There are countless bloggers earning 6 figures,
and they are blogging about all kinds of topics.
Not only that, blogs generally transform in topic and style over time - many successful blogs
are radically different now than when they were first started.
This is usually because the author learns and grows over time, the author's writing style
changes as he finds and develops his voice, and the blog simply starts to morph into what it
eventually becomes in a natural progression.
Even though this is true, there are some things you might want to consider before you start
your blog:
1) What do you have knowledge or personal experience in?
This is important because your confidence in a subject matter cannot be faked if you don't
know anything about it, and your readers will easily pick up on that. Likewise, if you know
what you're talking about, the writing will come easily and naturally.
2) What do you love to talk about and discuss with others?
Let's face it: if you want to make money blogging, you're going to be writing about certain
topics a lot. Make sure it is something you already love and don't mind discussing with oth-
ers on a regular basis (especially because we will be writing blog posts that encourage lots
of discussion through comments).
3) What would you like to learn more about?
Even if you start your blog only having some knowledge on a certain topic, after a while,
you're going to become an expert. You may as well pick a topic you love learning about.
