In-Depth Information
• Timer that will time up to 30 minutes
Procedure
• The day before you plan to conduct the test, water the soil
thoroughly, to the equivalent of 1" of rain.
• Place the beveled edge of the pipe against the dirt. Lay the
8" long board across the pipe, and use the mallet or hammer
to bang the pipe into the dirt until it is level with the inscribed
line.
• Cover the pipe with the lid and wait for 30 minutes. If the
lid doesn't form an airtight seal, use some duct tape to tape
the bottom edge of the lid to the pipe.
• While you are waiting, insert the soil thermometer 2"-3"
into the soil immediately adjacent to the pipe.
• Also while you are waiting, assemble the measurement
apparatus as follows:
• Use nail clippers to break the nipples off both ends of a
Draeger tube.
• Note that the tube has an arrow indicating direction of
airflow.
• Make sure the syringe piston is fully depressed, and
connect a piece of tubing from the syringe to the end of the
Draeger tube where the arrow is pointing.
