Vinegar Making Techniques
Making vinegar is easier than making wine or beer and
requires minimal equipment or ingredients. Other than a
vinegar crock and the wine or beer you'll be using, you can
get everything else you need for under $30. Here are the items
you'll need:
Vinegar Crock
Vinegar can theoretically be made in any sort of container.
Traditionally, it is made in oak barrels called vinegar casks or
in ceramic urns known as vinegar crocks.
There are three important features in a container used to make
vinegar. The container should have a mouth wide enough that
you can insert your vinegar raft and preferably your whole
hand. It should have a tap, spout, or spigot near the bottom,
but far enough from the bottom that it doesn't pick up
sediment. Finally, it should be made of a material that will not
react with the vinegar. Vinegar is a dilute acid, so it will react
with most metals given time.
Given these features, you are not constrained to only use
products officially sold as vinegar crocks. Anything officially
sold as a vinegar crock will quite frankly be seriously
over-priced. I looked on the Internet recently and found many
of them priced at nearly $100!
