Where to Eat & Drink
Pub grub remains the most convenient and affordable option with most pubs serving food
between noon and 2pm, and 5pm and 9pm. It can be hit-and-miss, but mostly you get a per-
fectly reasonable lunch or dinner. An increasing number of places are championing local
produce and bringing the concept of the gastropub to Wales. The trend for talented chefs to
abandon their urban stomping grounds, wind down a peg or two and get closer to their in-
gredients is making waves in rural Wales, and could turn your quick pit-stop lunch into a
long, lingering affair.
In larger towns and cities you'll find switched-on bistros and restaurants serving any-
thing from decent to superbly inspired food. An increasingly popular extension of the res-
taurant business is the concept of the restaurant with rooms, whereby fine dining and a cosy
bed are generally only a staircase apart. Most of these places combine gourmet food with a
small number of lovingly decorated rooms.
