Television
The Welsh-language TV channel S4C has been instrumental in supporting emerging talent
and promoting Welsh culture to the outside world. A fantastic success story for S4C was
the Welsh-language docudrama Solomon a Gaenor , nominated for an Oscar for Best For-
eign Language Film in 1999. Another S4C production Eldra , a coming-of-age tale about a
young Romany girl growing up in a slate-quarrying community in North Wales, won the
2003 Spirit of Moondance award at the Sundance Film Festival.
S4C and BBC Wales have also provided a springboard for small-screen success, challen-
ging preconceptions and fuelling independent production, while the BAFTA Cymru awards
are promoting the work of Welsh actors, directors and camera crew to a far wider audience.
The revival of BBC TV series Doctor Who , and its spin-of, Torchwood , have reintroduced sci-i fans to Cardif
as the centre of alien activity. Both are ilmed around Cardif Bay.
