In-Depth Information
into the car park, don't get too excited by the impressive building you can see in front of
you - that's just the stables! The grand manor house of the Marquesses of Anglesey is set
well back from the road surrounded by tranquil gardens, gazing out across the Menai
Strait to the heights of Snowdonia. The earliest parts date from the early 15th century, but
most of the Gothic masterpiece that stands today took shape in the 1790s.
Inside, the walls are hung with gilt-framed portraits of worthy ancestors of the Paget
family (William Paget was secretary of state to Henry VIII), who owned the house until
1976. A highlight is a giant painting by Rex Whistler filling an entire wall of the dining
room, which magically changes perspective as you walk around the room. In the grounds
there's a tearoom, a cafe, an adventure playground and a well-established rhododendron
garden.
The house is 2 miles southwest of Llanfair PG, along the A4080.
Bryn Celli Ddu
Burial Chamber
There are neolithic burial mounds scattered all around Wales, but many have been
completely stripped of their earthen covering by over-enthusiastic archaeologists and left
as a stone shell. What makes Bryn Celli Ddu fascinating is that it's relatively intact; you
can enter the barrow and pass into a stone-lined burial chamber that was used as a com-
munal grave 5000 years ago.
'The Mound in the Dark Grove' now sits on farmland southwest of Llanfair PG. To
find it, continue on the A4080 past Plas Newydd, look for the signpost on the right and
follow the country lane to the marked car park. From there a footpath follows a stream,
skirting the fields for five minutes.
