1585 for the merchant and courtier Robert Wynn, Plas Mawr is one of Britain's finest sur-
viving Elizabethan town houses. The tall, whitewashed exterior is an indication of the
owner's status, but gives no clue to the vivid interior, with its colourful friezes and plaster-
work ceilings. The admission price includes a helpful audio guide.

House is the town's oldest medieval merchant's house, dating from around 1300. Over the
years it has been a coffee house, temperance hotel, bakery and antique shop, but it remains
surprisingly well preserved. An audiovisual presentation shows daily life from different
periods of history. The National Trust shop downstairs has a good range of souvenirs and
gifts.

ded in 1881 and still going strong, the academy runs a full calendar of exhibitions by its
members in its twin white-walled galleries, plus visiting shows from the National Mu-
seum Wales and elsewhere. It also hosts the excellent Annual Summer Exhibition from
August to September, featuring the cream of contemporary fine art in Wales under one
roof.

Cadw (the Welsh historic monuments agency) offers combined tickets (adult/child £8.05/6.10) for the two historic
properties it manages in Conwy: Conwy Castle and Plas Mawr.
