standing outside to watch Mass being celebrated. On the interior face of this wall there are
rare remnants of pre-Reformation frescoes. St Beuno's is at its most atmospheric during
the Christmas, Easter and harvest seasons, when the floors are covered in reeds and fra-
grant herbs - unless, of course, you're a hay-fever sufferer.
East of Pistyll are the 100m sea cliffs of Carreg y Llam , a major seabird site, with huge
colonies of razorbills, guillemots and kittiwakes. A 3-mile loop walk starts from the Na-
tional Trust car park near the church.

Nant Gwrtheyrn
The village of Nant Gwrtheyrn was built for quarry workers in the 19th century, when
granite was dug out of the surrounding mountains and shipped to Liverpool, Manchester
and elsewhere to be used in building roads. The quarries closed after WWII and the vil-
lage was gradually abandoned. In 1982 it was given a new lease of life when the Welsh Lan-
guage & Heritage Centre ( 01758-750334; www.nantgwrtheyrn.org ; weekend course from £240; call ahead
for times) opened in the restored buildings. Its main focus is offering residential Welsh-lan-
guage courses to suit all levels of ability, including B&B accommodation in homey little
grey-stone cottages and meals at the on-site restaurant. Holidaymakers can also rent the
self-contained cottages.
