In-Depth Information
The main attraction of this seaside village is the excellent Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw
( www.oriel.org.uk ; admission free; 10am-5pm Wed-Mon, daily school holidays) , featuring a lively collec-
tion of work by contemporary Welsh artists, all of which are available for purchase. The
gallery is worth visiting just to gape at the flamboyant Victorian Gothic mansion it's
housed in, with its flashy exposed beams and stained glass. One room is devoted to the
history of the house and a collection of porcelain. Look out for the two carved stones in
the foyer, dating from the 5th or 6th century. There's also a nice cafe here, a newly opened
outdoor amphitheatre and paths through the wooded grounds, which roll down to National
Trust-owned Llandbedrog beach .
Up in the village, the Ship Inn (

) is a popular, family-
noon-midnight Easter-Oct, 4-11pm Mon-Wed, noon-11pm Thu-Sun Nov-Easter;
friendly pub with garden seating, offering hearty bar meals.

Abersoch
POP 1990
Abersoch comes alive in summer with a 30,000-person influx of boaties, surfers and
beach bums. Edged by gentle blue-green hills, the town's main attraction is its beach, one
of the most popular on the peninsula. Surfers head further south for the Atlantic swell at
Porth Neigwl (Hell's Mouth) and Porth Ceiriad .
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
PLAS YN RHIW
The three Keating sisters came to the rescue of this little decaying 17th-century manor house (NT;
01758-780219; www.nationaltrust.org.uk/plas-yn-rhiw ; adult/child £5/2.50; noon-5pm Thu-Sun Apr, Oct &
Nov, Wed-Mon May-Aug, Thu-Mon Sep) in the 1930s and '40s. The lush gardens provide a sharp contrast to the
surrounding moorland and the views over Porth Neigwl (Hell's Mouth) to Cardigan Bay are sublime. It's on the
heights near the hamlet of Rhiw, 4 miles east of Aberdaron; follow the signposts from the B4413.
