If you're not physically able to climb a mountain, short on time or just plain lazy,
those industrious, railway obsessed Victorians have gifted you an alternative. Opened in
1896, the Snowdon Mountain Railway is the UK's highest and its only public rack-and-
pinion railway. Vintage steam and modern diesel locomotives haul carriages from Llan-
beris up to Snowdon's very summit in an hour.
Return trips involve a scant half-hour at the top before heading back down again. Single
tickets can only be booked for the journey up (adult/child £20/15). Tens of thousands of
people take the train to the summit each season: make sure you book well in advance or
you may miss out. The frequency of departures is dependent on customer demand. Depar-
tures are weather dependent, and from March to May the trains can only head as far Clog-
wyn Station (adult/child £18/14) - an altitude of 779m.

Of all of the park's
youth hostels, Bryn Gwynant has the most impressive building and the most idyllic set-
ting, occupying a grand Victorian mansion facing over a lake to Snowdon - although it's
certainly not flash inside. It's located 4 miles east of Beddgelert, near the start of the
Watkin Path.

Superbly situated
on the slopes of Snowdon, 5.5 miles up the A4086 from Llanberis, this hostel has two of
the trails literally on its doorstep. The newer wing has the best rooms of any of the park's
YHAs; some even have en suites.
