), perched between the two lakes.
The road then follows the shore of
Llyn Peris
and enters Snowdonia National Park proper, making a spec-
tacular ascent along the very edge of Snowdon to
Pen-y-Pass
. The road descends to a junction by the
Pen-y-Gwryd hotel
(

), the training base for the 1953 Everest conquerors. Turn right onto the A498 for
a particularly picturesque stretch following Snowdon's southern slopes. Arguably the best views of the mountain
are from the viewpoint at
Gueastadanas
. The road then edges past the lakes
Llyn Gwynant
and
Llyn Dinas
before passing the
Sygun Copper Mine
(

). The hill on the other side of the road is
Dinas Emrys
(

, the legendary home of the red dragon. Look out for
Craflwyn Hall
on the right, a
little further on.
At
Beddgelert
turn right onto the A4085. To the left of the road the
Beddgelert Forest
comes into
view, followed by the small lake
Llyn-y-Gader
. Next up is the village
Rhyd Ddu
and then a larger
lake,
Llyn Cwellyn
, and the
Snowdon Ranger YHA
(

). Shortly afterwards the road leaves
the national park and turns its back on the mountain for the return journey to Caernarfon.
