;
A470, Coed-y-Celyn; apt from £55; )
Built in the
1850s for a mining magnate, this grand pile was auctioned off in the 1950s and half of it
has been converted into apartments. They're all different, but they're all huge - and ter-
rifically good value. We particularly love Apartment 4 for its moulded ceilings, grand
windows and views over the front lawns.

Sitting on the slopes
below a forested crag, the Vagabond is Betws' best hostel - and the only one within the
town itself. It's a simple set-up, with freshly decorated dorm rooms, shared bathrooms,
and an appealing bar, kitchen and common room downstairs. The £23 weekend rate in-
cludes a cooked breakfast.

Part of the Swallow Falls Complex - a bustling traveller hub that includes a
hotel, tavern, fudge shop and a campground - this no-frills hostel occupies an unattractive
building plonked in the middle of the car park. We prefer the terraced camping area at the
rear.
