In-Depth Information
The main commercial strip is spread out along the A496; as it passes through town it's
known as Church St, High St and King Edward's St. The oldest part of Barmouth is
around the quay. The unusual round building, Tŷ Crwn , was once a jail where drunk and
disorderly sailors could cool off until morning. In the 15th century, supporters of Henry
Tudor met in nearby Tŷ Gwyn to plot his ascension to the throne (the building now houses
Davy Jones' Locker) .
Sights & Activities
Wales' only surviving wooden rail viaduct spans the estuary and has a handy pedestrian
walkway attached that forms part of the Mawddach Trail ( Click here ) and Mawddach Way
Dinas Oleu
Rising behind Barmouth, rocky Dinas Oleu (258m) made history in 1895 by becoming the
first property ever bequeathed to the National Trust, kick-starting a movement dedicated
to preserving Britain's best landscapes and buildings. A network of trails covers the site,
including the popular Panorama Walk (signposted from the A496 on the eastern edge of
town), which has the best of the estuary views. Otherwise scramble up any one of several
alleys running off the main street, where you'll find the town gets more and more vertical,
with better and better views, until the old houses are nearly on top of one another.
