Bala Backpackers

most of Wales' hostels, Bala Backpackers has brightly painted dorms with a maximum of
four single beds (it's a bunk-free zone), and a renovated kitchen and bathrooms. It does,
however, have many more rules than your average hostel, including a midnight lockout.

breakfasts and a lovely setting in gardens with a gurgling brook make this former rectory
(1729) a great option. The owner is a mountain guide and white-water enthusiast. It's loc-
ated on the A494, a mile along the lake from the town.

your consummate Welsh-speaking village pub but the food is a step above. Most of the
vegetables and some of the meat comes from its own garden, and for dessert there's a deli-
cious array of homemade pies and puddings.
