18 Bridge St; mains £11-15; noon-2pm & 6-9.30pm Mon-Sat, 11am-3pm Sun)
De-
liciously informal, Gales is equal parts wine bar and bistro, and something of a Llangollen
institution. It boasts an ever-changing seasonal menu best enjoyed with a good glass of
wine from the extensive wine list. Turn up early, as it's not possible to reserve a table. The
owners also run the wine shop next door.

The water wheel still turns at the heart of this converted mill, now a cheerful,
bustling pub and all-day eatery. The deck is the best spot in town for an unfussy alfresco
lunch, with views over the River Dee to the steam railway.
Manorhaus
( 01978-860775;

; Hill St; 2-/3-course meal £26/33; 6-11pm; )
A sister to the
well-established Ruthin Manorhaus, this restaurant-with-rooms brought whole new strato-
spheres of swish to Llangollen when it opened in 2012. Thankfully the inventive food
lives up to the impressive packaging, with a similar approach to quality and detail. For the
complete experience, book one of the six stylish rooms upstairs (from £115).
