Llangollen International
Musical Eisteddfod
( http://international-eisteddfod.co.uk ; Jul) Staged at the Royal International Pavilion during the
second week in July, this multicultural competition is held in the spirit of building peace
through music. It starts on a Tuesday with Children's Day and a street parade, and culmin-
ates with a gala concert the following Sunday. Past performers have included the likes of
Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, José Carreras, Joan Baez and Ladysmith Black Mam-
bazo. It's a very big deal.
