Royal Welsh
( 01982-554419; www.rwas.co.uk ; Llanelwedd) Builth Wells fills to bursting at the beginning of
July, when 230,000 people descend for the show (founded in 1904), which involves
everything from livestock judging to lumberjack competitions. The Royal Welsh Show-
grounds play host to numerous other events throughout the year from antiques fairs and
garden shows to endurance horse-riding tournaments.

Bronwye
( 01982-553587; www.bronwye.co.uk ; Church St; s/d from £35/50; ) Overlooking the River Wye,
this imposing 19th-century house has five comfortable, modern rooms with good beds and
bathrooms. Unfortunately it retains little of its period character in the guest rooms but
there's a warm welcome and excellent breakfasts, which at these rates makes it a bargain.
