an house has a lovely garden terrace where you can sit and gaze over the harbour. The
young owners are charm personified and there's a generally upmarket ambience, although
the decor doesn't always hit the spot.

Pentower
( 01348-874462; www.pentower.co.uk ; Tower Hill; s £50, d £80-85; ) Built by Sir Evan Jones, the ar-
chitect who designed the harbour, this rambling turreted home is perched on a hill at the

The Lounge@Number3
( 01348-871845; www.theloungerestaurant.co.uk ; 3 Main St; mains £8-20; 6-10pm Wed-Sat) This simple
Italian with stripped floors, leather chairs and a mellow vibe is turning out to be Fish-
guard's best restaurant. An excellent menu of pasta, pizza, meat and fish combined with a
well chosen wine list make it the pick of the crop.

Royal Oak Inn
( 01348-872514; Market Sq; mains £5-15; 10am-11pm) Suffused with character, this old inn was
the site of the French surrender in 1797, and the table on which it was signed takes pride
of place at the back of the dining room. The pub has turned into something of an invasion
museum, filled with memorabilia. Not only does the Royal Oak have an important place
in Fishguard's history, it also hosts a popular live folk night on Tuesdays, when musicians
are welcome to join in.
