Its most distinctive feature is the arcaded parapet that runs around the courtyard, decor-
ated with a chequerboard pattern of purple and yellow stone blocks. The corbels that sup-
port the arches are richly adorned with a menagerie of carved figures - lions, monkeys,
dogs and birds, as well as grotesque mythical creatures and human heads. The distinctive
purple sandstone, also used in the cathedral, comes from Caerbwdy Bay, a mile southeast
of St Davids.
The palace courtyard provides a spectacular setting for open-air plays in summer.

Occupying a bold, semi-circular,
environmentally friendly building on the edge of town, Oriel y Parc is a winning collabor-
ation between the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and the National Mu-
seum Wales. Not only does it function as a tourist office and national park visitor centre, it
houses changing exhibitions from the museum's art collection. The focus is on land-
scapes, particularly Pembroke-shire scenes.

The only operator permitted by the RSPB to
land day-trippers on Ramsay Island (adult/child £15/7.50); bookings advised. It has a
range of other boat trips, including hour-long blasts in a high-speed inflatable boat (£24/
12), 2½-hour whale- and dolphin-spotting cruises around Grassholm Island (£60/30), and
one-hour jet-boat trips (£25/12). Book in advance.
