and an old-fashioned 'snug'. The restaurant is small and homey, serves good quality pub

Getting There & Away
Carew is 4 miles northeast of Pembroke and 6 miles northwest of Tenby. Bus 360 heads

CYCLING THE CELTIC TRAIL
From the laid-back joys of St Davids through the glorious Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and past the im-
posing castles in Haverfordwest, Pembroke and Kidwelly, the Celtic Trail ( www.routes2ride.org.uk/wales ) cov-
ers some of the best cycling routes in south Wales.
Starting in Fishguard, the trail follows a mixture of off-road coastal paths, riverside trails, old railway lines and
quiet lanes on its way to Chepstow, 220 miles away. From the magnificent traffic-free Llanelli Millennium
Coastal Park and sweeping Swansea Bay, the trail splits into two and riders can choose National Route 47, a high
level route that climbs almost 600m through the forests around Neath and Pontypridd, or low level National
Route 4, which sticks closer to the coast.
From Trelewis, north of Abercynon, there's more traffic-free cycling through Sirhowy Valley Country Park and
along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal into Newport, where the novel Transporter Bridge will take you
across the River Usk. From here it's just a few easy miles to the end of the trail.
The route is best ridden from west to east to make use of the prevailing westerly winds and is generally broken
into between five and seven days' riding.

Narberth
POP 2490
An arty little town full of independent shops, cafes, restaurants and galleries, Narberth is a
gem. Despite being light on specific sights, it's well worth a stop en route west for its
lively vibe, passion for food and thriving retail scene. Somehow managing to beat the eco-
nomic odds, butchers and delis, antique shops and boutiques line the streets, there's a
friendly food festival in September, a ruined Norman castle and an interesting town hall
with a double stairway.
