Sun Nov-Easter) Doubling as the tourist office, this centre has displays about the
drovers, the Black Ox bank, local legends and the Heart of Wales railway. Cleverly, faces
are projected onto life-sized statues of important identities to bring to life the history of
the town. The helpful staff can sort you out with information on walks in Brecon Beacons
National Park, to the south, and the moorlands and valleys of Mynydd Epynt, to the east.
Llandovery Castle
Across the car park from the heritage centre rises the shattered ruin of the motte-and-
bailey Llandovery Castle, which was built in 1116. The castle changed hands many times
between the Normans and the Welsh, and between one Welsh prince and another, taking a
severe beating in the process; it was finally left to decay after Owain Glyndŵr had a go at
it in 1403. It's fronted by an eerie disembodied stainless-steel statue commemorating
Llewellyn ap Gruffydd Fychan, who was gruesomely hung, drawn and quartered by
Henry IV for refusing to lead him to Owain Glyndŵr's base.
