Housed in a former art college, stylish little Oriel Myrddin stages changing exhibitions of
contemporary art. The shop sells a nice range of crafts and art books.
King Street Gallery
( www.kingstreetgallery.co.uk ; King St; 10am-5pm Mon-Sat) Opposite Oriel Myrddin is the
King Street Gallery, which sells interesting works by a cooperative of 29 local painters,
sculptors, ceramicists and printmakers.

Carmarthenshire
County Museum
( 01267-228696; www.carmarthenmuseum.org.uk ; Abergwili; 10am-4.30pm Mon-Sat) Located in
the country-house setting of a 13th-century bishop's palace, this museum is a musty em-
porium of archaeology, Egyptology, pottery and paintings, with re-creations of a Victorian
schoolroom and a collection of prehistoric standing stones. The museum is 2 miles east of
Carmarthen on the A40; take bus 280 or 281 (11 minutes).

Gwili Steam Railway
( 01267-238213; www.gwili-railway.co.uk ; adult/child £9/3) The standard-gauge Gwili Steam Rail-
way runs along the lovely Gwili Valley, departing from Bronwydd Arms, 3.5 miles north
of Carmarthen on the A484. It runs nearly daily in August; check the website or Car-
marthen tourist office for a full timetable. Bus 460 between Carmarthen (16 minutes) and
Cardigan (one hour and 10 minutes) stops at Bronwydd Arms.

Carmarthen's contribution to Welsh gastronomy is a salt-cured, air-dried ham. Local le-
gend has it that the Romans liked the recipe so much that they took it back to Italy with
them. Look for it at the market.
Cafe at No 4 Queen St
( 01267-220461; 4 Queen St; mains £4-8; 9am-5pm Mon-Sat) This chic and friendly little corner
cafe right in the middle of Carmarthen brews the best coffee in town and serves fantastic
homemade cakes and scones, as well as soups, salads, sandwiches and daily specials.
