( www.nosignbar.co.uk ; 56 Wind St) Once frequented by Dylan Thomas (it appears as the Wine
Vaults in his story The Followers ), the No Sign stands out as the only vaguely traditional
bar left on Wind St. It's a long, narrow haven of dark-wood panelling, friendly staff, good
pub grub and a seasonal beer selection; on weekends there's live music downstairs in the
Vault. The window seats, looking out over the hectares of goose-bumped flesh on the
street outside, offer a frisson of schadenfreude .

( 01792-521531; Gloucester Pl) An old-fashioned corner pub with polished mahogany and
brass bar, Victorian tiles and a range of cask-conditioned beers on tap, including Theak-
ston's Old Peculier. Thomas propped up the bar here when he was a cub reporter around
the corner at the South Wales Evening Post .

( 01792-458242; 42 Uplands Cres) Yet another Thomas hang-out, Uplands still serves a quiet
daytime pint in the Dylan Thomas snug. Come nightfall, it turns into a different beast alto-
gether as the hub of the city's live-music scene. It's big and brassy with reasonably priced
beer (Greene King Abbott real ale), pool tables and bands playing most nights to a mixed
crowd of students and locals.
