craft departing from the canal basin, 400m south of the town centre.
You can take to the water with Beacon Park Boats ( 01873-858277; www.beaconparkboats.com ) ,
which rents out four- or six-seater electric-powered boats (per hour/half-day/day from
£16/35/50; up to six people) and three-seater Canadian canoes (per hour/half-day/day
from £10/20/30). It also has a fleet of luxury narrowboats for longer live-in voyages, as
does Cambrian Cruisers ( 01874-665315; www.cambriancruisers.co.uk ; Ty Newydd, Pencelli) . Backwaters
Adventure Equipment Ltd ( 01873-831825; www.backwatershire.co.uk ; per day kayak/canoe £27.50/45) also
rents kayaks and canoes, including buoyancy aids and waterproof barrels.
Dragonfly Cruises ( 01874-685222; www.dragonfly-cruises.co.uk ; adult/child £7.20/4.50; Mar-Oct) runs
2½-hour narrowboat trips; there are departures once or twice daily on Wednesday,
Saturday and Sunday, and on additional days from June to August.
Brecon Beacons' classic off-road mountain-biking route is The Gap, following a
24-mile loop from Brecon that takes in a high pass close to Pen-y-Fan and an easy return
along the canal.
Biped Cycles OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 01874-622296; www.bipedcycles.co.uk ; 10 Ship St; per half-/
full day £18/20) rents bikes and can arrange guided rides. The Taff Trail heads south from
here to Cardiff. This forms part of Lôn Las Cymru, which also heads north to Builth
Wells.
A peaceful 8.5-mile walk along the towpath leads to the picturesque village of
Talybont-on-Usk. You can return on the X43 bus or, on summer Sundays, the Beacons
Bus B4 or B16.
