In-Depth Information
TO/FROM THE AIRPORT
Cardiff Airport is 12 miles southwest of Cardiff, past Barry.
The X91 bus (£3.90, 30 minutes, two hourly) heads between the airport and the Central
bus station.
The 905 shuttle bus (£1, seven minutes) links the airport terminal to nearby Rhoose
Cardiff Airport train station. Trains to Cardiff Central station (£4, 30 minutes) run hourly
Monday to Saturday and two hourly on Sunday.
A taxi from the airport to the city centre takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic, and
costs about £28.
BIKE
Cardiff City Council ( www.cardiff.gov.uk ) has a dedicated cycling officer and its website has
lots of information including lists of bike shops and route maps; click on Environment,
then Cycling.
CAR & MOTORCYCLE
Cardiff doesn't pose many difficulties for drivers, although most of the central city streets
between Westgate St, Castle St and St David's are closed to traffic.
If you're prepared to walk, it's often possible to find free street parking in the suburbs.
Pontcanna's Cathedral Rd has unrestricted parking but it's difficult to find an empty spot
during working hours. St David's has 2000 parking spaces above the shopping centre,
with an additional 550 below John Lewis. The main car park is open 24 hours (per three/
six/24 hours £4/9/18), with £2 overnight parking (5pm to 6am). In Cardiff Bay, there's a
car park on Havannah St (per hour/day 50p/£5).
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Local buses are operated by Cardiff Bus ( Click here ; 029-2066 6444; www.cardiffbus.com ; trip/day pass
£1.70/3.40) ; buy your ticket from the driver (no change given). Free route maps and
timetables are available from its Wood St office. Generally the buses are more convenient
for short trips than the trains, although there are a handful of stations scattered around the
city.
Two boats run alternating waterbus services along the River Taff from Bute Park to
Mermaid Quay, departing every half-hour from 10.30am to 5pm. The journey takes about
25 minutes and costs £3 each way.
TAXI
Cabs can be hailed in the street, ordered by phone, or picked up at taxi ranks outside the
train station, in Duke St opposite the castle, and on the corner of Greyfriars Rd and Park
