Often, a site is characterised by a typical mean diurnal course over the year.
This daily cycle can sometimes be clearly observed on a particular day. However,
most of the time it can only be observed to a very limited extent, or not at all.
With the exception of very few sites worldwide, the mean diurnal course is in line
with the so-called low-land or ground type (e.g. Norderney/Germany, Fig. 2.34).
