coast and in the inland, the speed is generally lower. For example mean wind ve-
locities between 6 and 7 m/s are measured at the North Sea coast and the adjacent
inland and speed between 5 and 6 m/s are observed for the Baltic coast. Inland,
wind velocities of these dimensions only occur at higher altitudes (or the highest
elevations of the low mountain ranges and on top of some well-positioned indi-
vidual mountains). In the remaining area of Germany there are average wind ve-
locities between 4 and 5 m/s in the Northern part, and sometimes even below
3 m/s in the Southern part. In protected river valleys in South Germany, the an-
nual mean velocities can sometimes even be below 2 m/s.

The distribution of wind velocity shown in Fig. 2.27 and 2.28 was identified by
using comparatively few measurement points. For a small-scale analysis, as it is
