The precipitation levels not only vary between different years, considerable
fluctuations can often also be observed within one year. Therefore Fig. 2.41
shows the monthly mean precipitation levels for Helgoland/Germany, Abid-
jan/Ivory Coast, Belém/Brazil, Béchar/Algeria, and Kuala Lumpur/ Malaysia.
Firstly, it becomes obvious that the annual cycles are on a very different level of
precipitation. This is due to the location of e.g. Béchar within the desert and
Belém within the tropics. Secondly, the plot shows clearly different annual cycles.
They are influenced by the seasons; e.g. Abidjan is characterised by a rainy sea-
son during May/June/July which is responsible for the significant peak within the
annual cycle. The same also applies to the other sites but is much less pronounced
there.
