the skull sent to Germany, where it sat almost forgotten (though not by the
Hehe) until it was returned to Kalenga in 1954. The return of Mkwawa's re-
mains was due, in large part, to the efforts of Sir Edward Twining, then the Brit-
ish governor of Tanganyika. Today, the skull of Mkwawa and some old weapons
are on display at the Kalenga Historical Museum ( Click here ) .
The grave of Chief Mkwawa is about 40km outside Iringa and signposted
about 11km off the main road to Ruaha National Park.

Campsite (formerly Riverside Campsite) has a lovely setting on the banks of the Little Rua-
ha River, with a large, shaded camping area, twin-bedded tents, wooden cottages (some
with bathroom), hot-water showers and good buffet-style meals. It's great overall value for
familiesand budget travellers. Tents are available for rent, and there are on-site Swahili lan-
guage courses. It's 13km northeast of Iringa; take a dalla-dalla heading towards Ilula (ie go
towards Dar es Salaam along the main road) and ask the driver to drop you at the signpos-
ted right-hand turn-off (Tsh1000), from where it's 1.5km further down an unpaved track.
Taxis charge Tsh10,000 to Tsh15,000 from town. Staff can help you arrange car rentals and
Ruaha safaris.
Iringa Lutheran Centre GUESTHOUSE $

clean, pleasant twin and double-bedded rooms with bathrooms and hot water, and a restaur-
ant. Room prices include full breakfast. It's on the northeastern edge of town, about 700m
southeast of the main road.
