( www.kigomabeach.com ; camping with own/hired tent Tsh10,000/15,000, r per person
30,000, cottage Tsh160,000, electricity per hr Tsh5000; ) This comfortable private gues-
thouse has a lovely cliff-top perch above Jakobsen's Beach ( Click here ) , while the two
shady campsites with ablutions, lanterns and grills are down near the lake. It's good value
and a wonderful spot for a respite. You can rent kayaks (per day Tsh15,000) and sailboats
(Tsh50,000), and water and soft drinks are available, but bring your own food. There are
two kitchens and lake-view decks with grills.
Aqua Lodge GUESTHOUSE $
( 0764-980788; Katonga Rd; s/d Tsh10,000/ 15,000; ) A fairly basic place now
owned by the Catholic order Brothers of Charity. With large clean rooms (some have fans)
on the beach, each with a screened porch and cheap wi-fi access, this is Kigoma's best-
value offering. There's no sign: it's situated across from the Tanesco generator. There are
also no restaurants on-site or nearby.
Coast View Resort HOTEL $
( 0752-103029; r Tsh30,000-50,000; ) The highest hotel in town didn't bother
to give its rooms any views; but you can see everything from the restaurant's gazebo tower.
The limited sightlines are the only shortcoming here; rooms and service are solid.
Kigoma Hilltop Hotel HOTEL $$
( 028-280 4437; www.mbalimbali.com ; s/d from US$90/110, ste US$150; )
The double and twin cottages here (half of which just got a thorough renovation) sit atop an
escarpment overlooking the lake within a large walled compound roamed by zebra. Rooms
have all the mod-cons they should at this price and the pool (nonguests Tsh10,000) is very
large. Snorkelling, jet-skiing and fishing trips are available. It's owned by Mbali Mbali
( Click here ) , who has lodges in all western circuit national parks.
Lake Tanganyika Hotel HOTEL $$
( 028-280 3052; www.laketanganyikahotel.com ; s US$70-90, d US$85-105, ste
US$120-180; ) Kigoma's other upmarket hotel began business in 2009 (after
an extensive renovation) but is already in need of repairs. Still, overall, it's a decent place
