GETTING THERE & AWAY
Bus
NBS, mostly offering four-across seating, is the top company operating out of Tabora and
some of its buses depart from its office at the 'old' bus stand. All other buses use the
nearby 'new' bus stand. Several buses depart daily between 6am and 10am to Mwanza
(Tsh14,000, six hours). There's also a service at 6am to Dodoma (Tsh30,000, eight hours),
7am to Kigoma (Tsh25,000, 11 to 12 hours), 7am to Mpanda (Tsh18,000, eight hours), and
6am to Arusha (Tsh30,000, 10 to 11 hours) via Singida (Tsh18,000, six hours) and Babati
(Tsh18,000, six hours). For Mbeya (Tsh34,000, one day), Sumry and Sabena go several
days each week.
Train
Kigoma
The regional capital and only large Tanzanian port on Lake Tanganyika is a scrappy but
agreeable town. It's also the end of the line of the Central Line train and a starting point for
the MV
Liemba
and visits to Gombe National Park. It's hardly a bustling metropolis, but it
feels that way if you've slogged across Western Tanzania by road to get here.
