Orion Tabora Hotel HISTORIC HOTEL $
( 026-260 4369; oriontbrhotel@yahoo.com; Station Rd; s/d Tsh50,000/65,000, ste s/d
Tsh80-95,000; ) The old railway hotel, originally built in 1914 by a German baron as
a hunting lodge, has been nicely restored and provides an unexpected respite for anyone
travelling in the region. The atmosphere fades inside the rooms, and not all are equal (try
for one in the Kaiser Wing, which have screened porches looking out onto the gardens) but
it outshines anything else in town and there's also a good restaurant and a well-stocked bar.
It's rather loud Fridays through to Sundays when the live band plays in the outdoor bar.
There is camping allowed, but you'll have to negotiate a price with the manager.
Golden Eagle Hotel GUESTHOUSE $
( 026-260 4623; Market St; tw without bathroom Tsh10,000, d Tsh10,000-20,000;
) Thanks to the friendly owner (plus the central location and good, cheap restaurant), this
1st-storey place is the most traveller-friendly spot in town. Rooms are old, though tidy, and
have TVs, hot water and ceiling fans.
John Paul II Hostel GUESTHOUSE $
(Jamhuri St; r Tsh 10,000, without bathroom Tsh7000; full-board Tsh19,000; ) Rooms
are ageing and drab, but scrubbed spotless and properly priced: the self-contained ones
have hot water. The entrance to the quiet compound is in the back. If the cathedral gate is
closed, you'll have to walk around to the east.
Frankman Palace Hotel HOTEL $
( 0768-683068; s Tsh30,000, d Tsh40-50,000; ) A newly constructed building with
small, but quality rooms that are brighter but blander than those at Orion Tabora. It's the
green-roofed building situated behind the bus station next to the stadium.
Nkaina Annex Guesthouse GUESTHOUSE $
( 026-260 5571; School St; d/tw without bathroom Tsh6000/7000) Simple but very clean
establishment with TVs in the rooms.
